Kitchen’s Floor have been around sometime now and can be proud of their consistently great output. No matter the line-up changes, as long as it keeps bumbling along it will all be OK. This Live CS out on Negative Guest List is no exception . In case you don’t know NGL is Brendan Annersley and other notable fuck-ups from around Australia and even International superstars such as Richie (Richie Records) and John Sharkey III (Clockcleaner infamy) sometimes contribute. They’re spewing out issues at a rapid rate and always features quality underground music. Anyway these psychos have started a record label, which I’d wager was started to self-release their own bands White Cop (RIP) and Meat Thump. This sucker sold out of it’s first press and is onto it’s second. Impressive stuff.

If the first CD/LP was Matt Kennedy looking into the dregs of his last M.B tallie this one is him sipping at the first and decidedly more boutique Coopers whilst navel-gazing up at the speckled sky. The world down here is still ugly but it’s got to get better. Right?

It’s a fine line between hope and despair and KF seem intent on exploring that dichotomy. This recording sees the addition of Andrew McLellan (Cured Pink) on Organ. Which adds a great deal to some songs whilst others tend to suffer slightly in the slower acoustic (nylon stringed) format. Personally I like to hear ‘Regrets’ played fast and furious (fuck me I did not write that) but it’s not about me. The best cut is Pissin’ On The Grave where everything just works. The organ hangs just right and the backing vocals by Julia Norris are pretty much perfect. Kitchen’s Floor recordings always lend themselves well to murkiness and this is well oil slicked. Grime all over it. Nah it’s all pretty clear for a live KF set, vocals could be turned up a touch but other than that no complaints. Consider this another endorsement.

Circle Pit - Sewercide 7"

It’s a shame Circle Pit got shafted at Deadshits #2 because I would have liked these songs played how they should be.

From what I could gather they went on far too late, suffered from noise restrictions and played to maybe 25 people. They didn’t want to be up on stage (even more than usual) and played accordingly (see: like shit but can you blame them?)

But then again I wasn’t really digging this record at the time and it bothered me. But after hearing it again on Art For Spastics this afternoon it clicked. Perhaps it endeared itself by the compromised fidelity (shitty radio rip). Circle Pit let it all hang out on this cut. This band are sloppy, grimy and glam as here. The palm mute on opener ‘Sewercide’ is a perfect foil for the slickish riffing going on underneath. It’s tongue and cheek and harks back to their self-titled 7” but with more dick posturing.

B-side continues along the same lines as the A but the riffing is more in line with their LP of last year ‘Bruise Constellation’. Definite KISS vibe here. Production of this record is spot on, dirty as hell. Denim’s coming back. Worth the gold coins.

I'm not sure if you've heard of this scuzzy lo-fi band but they pretty much invented lo-fi along with Matt Horseshit from another legend pop damage cru called Psychedelic Horseshit. I've been crying out for this american scuzz, legend lo-fi band for years now and what have I done about it? Not a goddamn thing. So it takes the good people of Brisbane based label Bedroom Suck to get of their arse and start bringing out some of the BEST "underground scuzz" talent from across the shores. I must say this band have been pretty consistently excellent throughout their career and a couple of albums on Siltbreeze is no mean feat unless you know previously you've been kicking it in bands like the Hospitals (RIP) and Hole Class (both whom I suggest you check out - if you already haven't).

This will also be Slug Guts sophomore (hahahahaha STREET PRESS and JOURNALISM) Howling Gang. This band have had their share of controversy and with this album hope to get back to what matters - the music. You know what? I might of initially had an aneurysm and been baying with the wolves (along with old man Cave, Stu Spasm, Tim Evans) But there's definitely a great band here and they are a changed unit after all (new singer, drummer, bassist? Sax player???). From what I've heard live Slug Guts will be drawing slightly more from bands like Christian Death and according to Sacred Bones Triffids. So from what I can gather Bedroom Suck are releasing this record in Australia and Sac Bones rest of world. I haven't asked. Don't care.

So what you need to know here is that there is a great tour happening in April and you should do your best to get off yer arse and go. APLOMB, APLOMB, APLOMB. (I made this post not wearing anything)

Sraight Arrows - It's Happening Again

I’ve never enjoyed the Nuggets much nor thought too much of their imitators. So it’s a little bit surprisingly how much I like the new Straight Arrows record. Yes it does have those songs that conjure up past those past ghosts. ‘It Happens’ is basically the Keggs ‘To Find Out’ slowed down (but who hasn’t ripped off this band?). but it has a bit of grit and variety to it. ‘Haunted Out’ explores light psych areas that SA seem enamoured with. Plenny reverb and treble. I’d say more on this record but you’d throw the monitor out the window because of my overuse of the word “garage” and lack of familiarity with the genre. Enjoy, nonetheless.

Blank Realm - Deja What (Bedroom Suck 2010)

The day I began to write this it was just post Brisbane flood. It was blistering hot and I was dripping with sweat. The sun had baked in the mud and there was still an air of uneasiness. There’d been nothing to do for a week and everyone was feeling prickly. So it seemed fitting to post a record that seemed to encapsulate all of these indescribable feelings.

Blank Realm, Brisbane’s leading spiritual rock mystics, deliver their second LP in as many years on local imprint Bedroom Suck. ‘Deja What?’ was originally released as a CDR on ‘Albert’s Basement’ with a paltry 52 copies being made. Well this vinyl re-issue certainly solves the problem of nobody hearing it and it has undergone a facelift being re-mastered by ECSR’s Mikey Young. On this record Blank Realm steer more steadily towards a pop trajectory keeping the psychosis of ‘Heatless Ark’ canned for the time being. Anyone who has seen Blank Realm this year would expect this to be the case with their live set always edging closer to a trad rock sound.

The first track has Blank Realm display the drugged, dubby vibe perfected by bands on the label No Not Fun. No surprises here, it chugs along at a meandering pace with enough going on to keep it interesting. But the song actually serves as a nice way in for hit “Full Moon Door” which has me recalling folk greats Neil Young and Dylan for no particular reason. Maybe it’s the vocals, maybe the feeling of longing or partially the instrumentation. Organ sounds massive here and the reverb takes the song to out of space. However, BR never ones to dwell bring us back to Earth with the motorik muscle of ‘My Nativity’. Kind of sounds BR didn’t know what to do with this one and towards the end builds up nicely but for all the flatness before it seems all a little in vain. BR reset the controls for some Blues Control exploration on ‘Trained Creep’. By no means a bad jam but I think we all know BR are capable of much more. Logan’s hands plod appears at first to be a Pocahaunted throw back until the beat kicks and transforms into something a little uglier and less palatial. Soul’s Illusion hints at the past passive-aggression they once harboured.

This record is a trip and as was the case with ‘Heatless Ark’ it’s not always good vibes. BR are still doling out the pop hits on occasion. I’ll wager that the next record might be even more straightforward than this. Who knows, doubt BR even do. Always a pleasure.

Dolphins into the future has come all the way from Belgium to provide warbly synth, dolphin language mimicry. Sounds like a bit of wank? Well, yeah, it is but ' On Sea-faring Isolation' is a pretty good record. That guy that runs Volcanic Tongue gets well hard over this stuff and whilst oft running into HYPERBOLE generally runs a tight distro. The Wire writing team are engaged in a jerk circle right now over this shit.

Cannon/Cobwebbs Split Single CDR

Since Chinese Burns packed up their bags the Brisbane garage scene has been a bit turgid, an anti-boner if you will. Sure there’s the insipid Sips but they’re about as interesting as taking as wiping your arse, taking out the garbage, etc. Thankfully there’s some young blood on the scene who unfortunately have just taken a two month hiatus. But these tracks should keep you interested enough until they return. The band’s name is Cannon, not to likely to be confused with the German 80s metal band.

My housemates’ boyfriend band was playing a show. I must admit being a little reluctant to go to the show because friends of friends or friend’s bands (or whatever relation) tend to suck. In this situation I’m not sure what’s worse: sitting through the band or lying about how you enjoyed the show.

Suffice to say I had very low expectations, which also happens to be best way not to be disappointed in life. But to my surprise this Cannon band were pretty great. Pooling from the poppy garage side of Tyvek, aus retardation garage that the UV Race have perfected and the party band thing that Black Lips do so well.

On the theoretical flipside Cobwebbs prefer to drill underwater. Opting for plenty of reverb here, it sounds like they're drowning. This is no bad thing and they seem on intent on pushing a more psychedelic edge. I guess they could be mistaken for a more restrained Thee Oh sees. The end solo on 'I Never Met You Before' is not dissimilar to something the Brian Jonestown Massacre would do but unlike the BJM it is unexpected. Last song sees them pushing out into the universe traversing into Spaceman 3 territory.

It’s self-released and was handed out at their last show which I regret missing (thanks for the copy Matt W.D.). Be glad that Brisbane is back on the right track.

6th of October Go to Sun Araw on Wednesday night part of the Open Frame experimental wankfest. Be sure to dust of your vintage beret and read up on expensive wine essential when visiting cultural venues like the Brisbane Powerhouse. It's 15 gold coins and let me tell you this will be a show to talk to all your friends that read music magazine The Wire. I expect that you are very excited to hear one of leaders of the serious music genre hypnagogic pop. Thursdee is sold out but I wouldn't wast my hard earned rissoles on the snooze fest that is Grouper. Pimmon and Aidan Baker are also playing. Here's a nice poster for a show in another state the next night.

Saturday the 9th of October there is a 4zzz Carpark pop show. The poster lays it down. Conwae Burrel aka Extrafoxx is about to drop a new CD the following week. So get along and support yr scene. Never heard the other bands...

er what else. Show on the same time but in the evening. New label and imprint will be providing some musics in King George Square of all places. Bands that'll be playing is zee brutal Psy Ants, some chilled grrove rock by Blank Realm, avant-hard 3 piecery by AMSS, some south.ern (bored) lord drone via Ambrose Chapel. DJs by the Raschionale Academy (play some deerhunter ya cunz). Starts at 6pm goes on till 10pm should be p. good.

Poster says it all. But the music on this one tickles my fancy more than the saturday carpark. Some new bands here 'The Sixteenth Century' is Michaela's new band (ex Marl Carx) and not sure about the first band. Per Purpose are the best demented pop band in the country by a damn mile. Knee Chin bring their herky jerky rock via the past spirit of unwound. This should be a v. good show but it's in direct competition with garage revival night at Clubhouse.

I'm not sure which I'm going to but this hipster's pubes caught my eye, the cleaver on the other hand belongs on a Slug Guts poster. Chinese Burns are ex garage kings of Brisbane have released a single (probably more) that was acclaimed by termbo and z-gun, not that should mean anything but they're a pretty classy band.

October 22 (the following friday) brings a real swell show at Burst City. Bands include very new band Meat Thump (Negative Guestlist zine/White Cop) and you know it's going to be great. Garage pop band Sweet Dreams and old bris early 2000 bris punk band Dick Nasty will headline. I remember when I was 16 and snuck into the Jube to see them (so punk). Also Per Purpose are playing and even more susprisingly Scraps - one woman, ethereal pop, cheap keyboards and lots of delay.

I always wanted to hear an Obama speech blown out ala Psychedelic Horshit’s Mash-Up next to a slab of psychedelic rock . Actually it never occurred to me but The Chinese Restaurants deliver exactly that on their second 7” courtesy of the outstanding S-S records. I imagine people will reference Flipper when referring to this record but that’s only correct in the structural dirge created here. What’s on offer is a small slice of Monoshock damage with dollops of lo-fi garage. The vocals at time have some of the madness of the current French garage luminaries (Cheveu, Crash Normal, the Anals etc). Push yer younger sister down the stairs to get a copy… Or get a copy and then push yer sister down the stairs while listening to it. Your Choice.

If you call your band The Chickens you’re either going to be absolute puss or you’re going to be a bunch of weirdos making great rnr totally taking the piss.

These guys are a FNU Ronnies offshoot. I was first introduced to this munted, feathery beast from excellent Siltbreeze compilation 'Skulls Without Borders'. (Let me digress here, this compilation is pretty shit hot and sold out in a flash. Let's continue with this digression, Rockinghorse Records, a Brisbane Independent record store wants $50 for this baby and like I have that many gold coins. These bastards want to charge $34 per record or even more, go fuck yourself, no wonder you have a fledgling business). Anyway back to The Chickens they have recently released their debut single 'Chicken Shit' on the very same legendary label compilation that has caused me so much anger. This is a rock record, make no mistake about that but have borrowed the same cut and paste approach as FNU Ronnies employ just to fuck with you some more (see Shit City). This thing sort of reminds me of melding the mechanistic alienation of Chrome with some screwball French glue-wave bands (without de synth). The drums remind me of Cheveu (French, garage rnr fuck-ups). Basically what I’m trying to say is that this is the fucking tits and you shouldn’t even be reading this queer hyperbole just download the fucking thing and never visit this god awful blog again. Don’t bother trying to buy it because it’s out of print, I snoozed on this and I fucking lost out. Bugger me.

Chicken Shit 7" + The Chicken

You know these Factorymen are pretty friggen grand. I mean continuing on a theme this is another off shoot but this is a one-man deal from Steve Peffer (Homostupids fame). In terms of weirdness this is not too dissimilar to The Chickens in a way. There are some moments that have me recalling the Cabaret Voltaire or rather having a fucking laugh about the whole thing. I can see Peffer chortling at these “cold-wave” bands saying to himself “look you revisionist pussies this is how it’s done” (sounds like a guy that talks to himself a lot). I don’t know about you but this shit is right up my alley (right fucking up in there). This thing has damn sucked the fluid protecting my brain (cerebrospinal fluid smartarse) out my head and I’m left feeling like I’ve witnessed some sexual assault. It didn’t happen to me but I still feel dazed, vulnerable and somewhat responsible for the whole damn mess. You really need to hear this and make up your own mind. I’m missing the mark so bad I’m embarrassing myself. Both 7" S/T EP and full length 12" Shitmen are on Richie records. Pretty sure they're out of print.

It's been awhile since I've posted and this one has been just collecting dust. So without further ado...

I figure most people who read this blog/live in Brisbane will have the physical copy of this 7”. They put out this record early in the year on the ever reliable Sydney based label RIP Society. It is since become out of print and will be repressed eventually (says rip’s myspace). It’s their first venture onto wax and they’ve produced a pretty stellar record.

In case you don’t know, Kitchen’s Floor are an honest to God minimalist, pop muck band. Cheap wine, home-brand food and general frustration seem to be the inspiration here. So not much has changed from their first album ‘Loneliness is a Dirty Mattress’ to this 7”. But the saying goes if aint broke… I’m sort of selling the band short here the 7” has several points of differences: the song-writing is slightly sharper, group more focused and individual instruments can be clearly heard. Other members in the band are finding their own place within the band. The bass-line in ‘Orbit’ leads out in front doing most of the work allowing the guitar to add its own inflections and variations on the theme. ‘Regrets’ sees the band at its heaviest and also most compelling. The b-side ‘Still Night’ is VU inspired pop dirge and unfortunately doesn’t hold its own against the killer a-side, can’t have it all it seems. 2/3 aint bad folks.

Dead Farmers

Dead Farmer’s are a 3 piece rnr outfit from Sydney. They’ve been kickin around for sometime now. Not much recorded material has been available from these guys up until now. From memory (always hazy) only some demos and a sold out 7” on Aarght records are the only documentation. Which isn’t a problem if you live in Melbourne but for the other Aus states and overseas has proved a frustrating wait. Luckily their RIP Records LP ‘Go Home’ sets the record straight.

‘Go Home’ is littered with classic riffs and rock posturing done right. Although trad rock isn’t really my favourite thing, just about every other band butchers this style of music. It is worth noting when it’s good. The recording itself is fantastic it’s blown out and fried hitting all the right notes just as overseas contemporaries Birds of Maya (+Purling Hiss) and Mount Carmel do. For me this record hits its straps about half way through and somewhat ironically ‘Slow Time’ is where they find their groove. From here on in, it’s rocky, messy, looser and more unpredictable territory, which basically translates to, "more interesting".

Dud Pills

Dud Pills sound like they are hitting their collective heads against a fibro wall. They are bored, angry and fed-up of the life on offer and to offset these frustrations have formed a rock band. They manage to steer clear of cliché and offer something that rings true of the real frustrations they face.

Dud Pills are a lean Adelaide three piece. Two guitars, drums and shouted vocals. They are sister band to Bitch Prefect sharing members and by default aesthetics. Bitch Prefect has it hot for the Clean, Modern Lovers and bedroom pop like GBV. Dud Pills definitely aren’t without these influences. Even through the mud and dissonance you hear the pop even though it don’t glisten. Dud Pills are definitely closer in sound to BNE peers Kitchen’s Floor.

On this cassette, ‘Sexy as Hell’ there are four recorded tracks and four live tracks. Essentially the quality doesn’t differ much. The live tracks add a bit more spark but you know, alcohol and atmosphere lead to a slightly more spirited performance.

‘Sitting Inside’ recounts Dan Melchoir’s rant at the start of ‘O’ Anxiety’ “I got knots in my guts and angst in my pants” and sort of sums up the sentiments on ‘Sexy as Hell’. But what some British ex-pat in America sings about doesn’t exactly translate to what three late teens in suburban Adelaide are getting at.

Per Purpose - Demonstrating

Per Purpose are a BNE band. It consists of Glen Schenau (Kitchen’s floor, Marl Carx), Harry Byrne (Loomer) and Joe Alexander. Glen Scenau’s song-writing pulls influence from a variety past Australian pop and rock. Eccentrics such as Ed Kuepper (Laughing Clowns era and is married with more contemporary rock influences like Bird Blobs (see bass intro to Warburton). Here on their CDR ‘Demonstrating’ the listener is run ragged by 4 songs running just under 7 minutes. Drums and bass lock hard, providing a steady yet slippery groove that adds both melody and creep in equal parts.

In my past listening experiences pop bands struggle to incorporate “experimental” leanings. Yet this is exactly where Per Purpose excels. Whilst this is just a demo, the balance between pop and weirdness is in perfect harmony. There seems to be so much more going on than there actually is. Here each voice of the band is individual yet completely cohesive. Per Purpose are a set of contradictions that just seem to work. Opener ‘Out the Seam’ is initially memorable for its caustic vocal and guitar delivery. Yet on repeat listens the bass actually punches through setting the aggressive mood and withdraws into the song allowing the guitar and vocal to deliver the final blows.

This is more pop than Glen’s previous band Marl Carx but it is a great deal more unsettling. Per Purpose could lose itself in ideas if it wasn’t crafted so well. Per Purpose make everything seem accidental but it's really all on…

The Native Cats

Nothing changes, the good shit always comes out of the arsehole, the backwaters, the isolated and the frustrated. The arsehole I refer to is Tasmania and the good shit is band the 'Native Cats'. This release got some hype from overseas blogs and garnered critical acclaim but this all amounts to fuck all in the schemes of things. I heard blips, noticed some blog entries but ultimately forgot until I stumbled onto them again. This isn't exactly going to ignite the airwaves but it deserves greater recognition.

I love being constantly reminded that the best things come from very little. Driving, melodic bass-lines complemented by cheap keyboards, drum machines and the vocals. The bounce and pop of 'Severed Heads' and a bleakness that rivals Pink Reason. The Fader says they sound like 'The Young Marble Giants', I've never heard them, I will get onto that. You know that band Drunk Elk? It's a little more fully formed than that. What I really love about these songs is that there is no easy way out, the ideas are seen through to the end. The Native Cats are never cheap even if their keyboards are.

Listen to track 'Game of Numbers' and you'll be reaching for a handful of valium and some shit gin, probably like me, Beefeater. When you feel like you've been beating your head against the brick wall too many time try putting 'Always On' instead. But remember you're flipping a coin; heads catharsis, tails; could be the end.

Fabulous Diamonds II

Fabulous Diamond’s new record II finds them exploring deeper and longer drones. Fabulous Diamonds are a duo, it consists of keyboard drones, simple vocal melodies and drumming that propels the whole thing forward. It just so happens that simple formulas also happen to be the most effective. The child-like, mantric vocals of Nisa remind you of your own past and the synths propel you into the future. Simple dichotomies like this make Fabulous Diamonds intensely interesting.

But that’s probably a load of wank. Fact is, that the jams here are on par with the excellent Blues Control and their influence can be clearly heard on ‘4’. The record is bookended by two extended jams both over the ten-minute mark and these two really do melt the brain. Fabulous Diamonds excel in composition and even the longer songs are lean. They’ve trimmed the fat and avoided monotony. This record reminds of favourites from last year, cs “Clusters” by Super Minerals which, similarly hammered simplicity and smart composition. This is one of the years best.

Chrome Dome’s self-titled mini album is their latest release following Negative Vibes CS and 7” from yesteryear. They’re from Melbourne and are on label ‘Lexicon Devil’. Band consists of Shaun Smith of Pathetic Human (hardcore, powerviolence) and Deaf!Deaf! (no-wave, post-punk) fame. Andrea Blake along time ago now played in Brisbane bands Nite School (Riot Grrl) and (an early incarnation of) Feathers. These two share vocals, keyboard and programming responsibility whilst Bryce Sweatman keeps time. He also played in Pathetic Human – drummers always get the raw end of the deal.

These guys are essentially a dance band on bunch of barbiturates. They played in BNE not long ago and whilst I missed their show at Latrobe Tce I did happen to catch them at Burst City and it was a great, fun thing to witness. I was in a torrid mood and relationship troubles were getting me down lucky I had Chrome Dome and Lakes to lighten the mood.

Influences are fairly obvious (I Wanna Hurt, Ugly Pumping Muscle, People Like You) yet it is all very 2010. Which, comes as no surprise as it’s been a bit of a renaissance of this type of shit, which has been going for awhile but for some blog reason seems to be “in” (Repairs, NoTV, Dirty Beaches, Hanging Coffins, Wet Hair etcetc).

There are some straight-up bangers here ‘Topped’ and ‘Disgusting’ are both puerile and joyous. What I mean is, this band seem to revel in their depression and it just comes across as love. Know what I mean? No? Awesome. It’s great this band have a cool sound going on but I need some variety. Your not so different if you can’t even stray from your own goddamn formula. Luckily ‘CMC’ drops and creeps along with droned out vocals and is a revelation. Chrome Dome is a unit nuanced enough not to run into the monotonous.

For some reason I thought there would be a considerate lack of shows in old BNE town but they're coming thick and fast. Girl, garage duo 'Super Wild Horses' are on Aarght! Records (ECSR, Oooga Boogas, Dead Farmers) and as you expect, deal with dinkum, honest to God rnr that has come to define Aarght Records. It’s a minimal equation: guitar, drums and voice and that's just fine with me.

Shit! I thought the girls had somehow trapsed into excellent instrumental territory but it was just V-3s 'Superhuman', my mistake. Anyhow they're bringing Sydney band Southern Comfort with them, some no-name babes (Circle Pit, Straight Arrows, Downtown) who just want to play some classic rock with plenty of reverb. I should mention that they will be in full band mode with some guys named Cam and Lee. To wet your whistle I have some tunes from SWH debut ep 7" (I believe). Come along, get drunk, forgot about the fact you live here.

I saw Loomer not long ago and they'd improved out of sight. They're now mining darker depths and wallowing in more reverb and not in a lame way either. If you’re into this sort of thing maybe you’d like Oly band ‘Broken Water’ formerly 2/3s of band ‘Sisters’.

Some good stuff eh, bold stuff means I like it or am I eagerly awaiting release. The other stuff, I either haven't heard or am not that keen on. Individual taste and what do I know?

I personally recommend that economical priced Look!Pond CD, originally released a few years back now. At $6.95 it's considerable cheaper than that cask of goon you were going to buy and let's face it, you wouldn't of even made it half way through.

Also, if you can find it the EP, 'Made After Hearty Meals' by "hearty meals" he means fried eggs and $5 bottles of wine. Matt Kennedy recorded this under the same name before the band became a three piece. It's pretty raw but that's how I like my eggs, on the runny side anyways. It's long sold out but maybe a savvy google search will yield some results, fuck it, I'll up it now.

I can't judge much from one track but sounds like some My Disco repetition with Panda Bear vocalising - bro harmonies and some some percussive tinkering maybe in the vein of 'This Heat'. Certainly an odd combination.

*Further investigation has lead to more early Animal Collective harmonies and a sunnier disposition. I should of been able to tell that from the beach and that psychedelic, triangular portal. Here listen for yourselves.

The Twerps are from Melbourne, Australia. They play rock n roll music. They sound like they love Dunedin a lot, aus pop like The Go-Betweens and classic rnr see ‘The Modern Lovers’. Closest contemporaries are probably Dick Diver and Woollen Kits. They supported the Black Lips not long ago and whilst these songs aren’t nearly as upbeat but you can see why… Sounds like a few (four actually but who gives a fuck) bored kids had nothing better to do than start a band and write some bedroom pop.

This isn’t something I’d listen to everyday but it would serve as a nice soundtrack to a quiet BBQ with a few VB’s and sausages (Vegan for that dick no one likes) on a Sunday afternoon.

Two Sydney bands in two posts and both records are superb. Both Circle Pit and NoTV deal with (sub)urban boredom and disaffection. Doing all the regular shit no-hopers do but have managed to form and stay in their respective bands. They become a voice for the people that see and like them. It’s the same reason why Kitchen’s Floor are doing so well in Brisbane.

Most bands like this break-up after not long. Yeah they played some great shows at some warehouses, friend’s houses and art spaces that CDR they gave out to their friends was great. Yet they never really made a greater impact or reached their potential. So it’s good to see some bands sticking it out and getting better.

Circle Pit is Jack Mannix and Angela Bermuda and despite being misfits playing junkie pop music have stuck it out. This is their new LP ‘Bruise Constellation’. Here they are fighting and clawing their through the murk to find some clarity in life. This is a fuck you to their detractors, a step forward and fucking ride into depths of messy relationships, depression and all the shit that gets us down. But like any trip it has its moments of exuberance and joy.

These guys are onto something here.

Naked On The Vague - Heaps of Nothing

This has to be one of my most anticipated releases of the year. Naked On The Vague have added two members since their first LP ‘Blood Pressure Sessions’ and written some new songs. Goodo, this has meant ‘Heaps of Nothing’ is far more dense than its predecessor. It also sounds more garage which is no bad thing.

NoTV are a mixture of things like Chrome, Eat Skull, Dead C, Lakes, Psychedelic Horseshit and Suicide but have been doing this well enough to have their own fully formed sound. I’m not going to spoil this for you.

This has only been available a week or two. However, I like to have faith in mankind's ability to be responsible consumers and buy this shit if it is enjoyed. Unless you’re broke it should be the next CD you buy. Enjoy.

Moody Blues Past Cues No News

I'm posting this because The Stabs played an excellent set the other night. I don't think this is their best record it feels like 'Dirt' part two. This is probably because these songs have been around for years and this is just how these things to go. 'Dirt' was The Stabs breaking out of the burbs into the wilderness. "Dead Wood' is them honing their knife skills in the cabin they built near the swamp. Problem is out down near the swamp things tend to stagnate a little.

That's not to say it doesn't have some really good tracks on it. I'm not sure if it's the recording but the songs lack the rough edges to make this believable, it's just two damn clean (for my liking anyway). If you're familiar with the band you know the drill: minor note squalls, murderous lyrics, fuzzy bass, punchy short snare rolls. The Stabs have been doing this for years and are adept at it. So if you like that kind of thing, you know, swamp rock, click then buy.

Marl Carx Last Show + CDR

Right. Well Marl Carx were a Brisbane duo with members Glen Schenau (Kitchen's Floor, Per Purpose) and Michaela Chin. It just so happens that next Friday is their last show and their CD launch on Bedroom Suck.

So what I have for you today is Marl Carx (spelt with a K formerly) second CDR of demos between march and august 2008. This is a real minimal, no wave exploration with just drums, guitar and vocals. The obvious comparison is to DNA. 'A Pants' refers to no-wave band Y Pants (count how many times I say no-wave in this post). However, this aint all about Mars and Arto Lindsey, on the last track 'Quit Guitar' there is a nod to the essential Tasmanian rock band Sea Scouts. 'Grow Hair' is a straight-up, riff heavy post punk number (post punk haha). Yep this is varied and good.

Best thing about this band is the guts and ambition. Shame it didn't go on for longer but it was pretty swell while it lasted.

So make sure you get along to their show and buy their new/old CD.

Internationale 4 - The Pheromoans

It's not often you happen to stumble open bands like the Pheromoans. I must of read a review in Z Gun or Terminal Boredom and thought the name sounded cool so I sought them out using google and without much fuss found their tape on Night-People (pretty good label).

I found myself listening to them for the first time on a ferry, it was gloomy and I felt disorientated. I was trying to get to the city but somehow managed to go the other way. All the while nursing a bad headache from increasing nausea and confusion. For some reason I feel that was a perfect introduction to the P-moans.

There's a suburban psychosis to all of this, it's highly idiosyncratic and very alien/outsider to anyone not in on it. In a way this reminds me the Hospitals *cough* masterpiece *cough* Hairdryer Peace. Mainly in terms of the cut and paste nature of the song-writing on the tape. Also to go along with this bullshit comparison you have to replace the tropical psychosis of Hairdryer Peace for the gloom of England. AND drums and production are also similar. Feel free to disagree.

In terms of more influences and reference points I'm at a bit of loss. You know because their English and play rnr they're going to be compared to the Fall. This really isn't accurate and reeks of lazy journalism. An English person talking, mumbling over out of tune guitars does not equal The Fall. It's also pretty clear they're taking the piss.

Anyway what's important that this is an engaging tape worthy of your time. Enjoy. If you have any of their sold 7"s or eps send me an email I'd be real appreciative.

Eddy Current Supression Ring - Wet Cement (Mexican Summer)

There's no need to talk about the ECSR Wet Cement single other that it's standard fair for them oh and it has three tracks. Lead single is a thank you to mom for giving birth to Brendan Suppression.

Royal Headace s/t (RIP Society Records)

The second is by Sydney band Royal Headache. They do this soul pop, garage thing, they love the Crystals and all those 50s/60s girl groups which I've never listened to but still will make reference to because this is a blog. Plenty of soul here it's breathin' life into the thing and it's mildly reminiscent of King Khan without ever sounding like the cat. It has heart and lots of people will enjoy this. It's a digital rip jus' saying.

UV Race - Malaria 7" (SS Records)

Finally we have the UV Race with Malaria. I really like this one, it's sloppy rnr endearing as hell. There's something lovable about singer Marcus. His lyrics and delivery are dumb, smart, funny and relatable all at the same time. This band mean what they're playing and don't take it all too seriously. This is inept r n r at its finest. Well done UV's.

Internationale 3 - Singles Club. Lamps + Eat Skull

There isn't much that compares to a perfect 7". There's no room for excess or shitty songs. On both Eat Skull's 'Jerusalem Mall' and Lamps 'Niels Bohr Was an Excellent Ping Pong Player' finds the bands producing some of their best material.

Eat Skull - Jerusalem Mall (woodsist)

'Jerusalem Mall' loses the chords and trades it up for some solid riffing with great vocals this A side is a real winner. 'Don't leave me on the speaker' finds them mucking around with brighter guitar tones with sunnier results. Thank You! Smokebreaks is standard Eat Skull fare which is no bad thing. I know 7"s aren't indicative of a new direction but the first two tracks here show Eat Skull exploring some new sides, extremely refreshing.

Lamps - Niels Bohr (dull knife)

There isn't a lot to say about this 7" other than it fucking rules. If you've heard Lamps before you know the drill but in my opinion the song-writing here is pristine. 'Niels Bohr' is almost perfect. The drums provide the classic caveman stomp whilst the guitar drills deep into your frontal lobes. Expect it swimming around for days. The b-side, 'I've Been On A Lot of Camels (ahuh) adds heavy amounts of sludge with grinding bass. Effortlessly good.

Blank Realm - Heatless Ark LP (no not fun)

I've seen this band a few times over the years but I have little recollection of them actually playing. Most recently I remember them playing with Slug Guts and a bunch of other bands. I can distinctly remember strong Kraut Rock/Space Rock leanings that didn't seem to stray too much from the formula. So without being bad, I sort of filed them away under the category "will get around to, one day, maybe". Turns out being unemployed has its benefits and I stumbled across this on the internet and decided to download it.

The first few songs reminds me of a creepier, less structured Valet. There's the intermittent bass strums and heavily delayed male/female vocals drawled over the top. The drums and guitars appear (and disappear) whenever they feel like it . I'm not really sure what exactly follows but from what I can determine it's a haze of synth, percussion loops way low in the mix and other beeps and gurgles. By the end of 'Ebay Babylon', Blank Realm find themselves gravitating towards Growing's meditations without the warmth. The centerpiece of the record 'Heatless Ark' is the most structured of all the songs displaying elements of punk, new wave, no wave, space rock and all the elements mentioned before. The track builds slowly, trips up on itself, yet is always gains momentum. The last song tracks back into the more discordant, as if to suck the heat right out of what just came before. 'Heatless Ark' is a compelling listen and I'm kicking myself for not paying closer attention.

Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Rush To Relax

I'm no expert when it comes to a good time r n r band like Eddy Current Suppression Ring so I think it is best that is kept brief. On their third record they have some good songs on display particularly the first couple and the longer, psych-tinged 'Second Guessing'. I'm not saying the other songs are bad by any stretch but they're too straight-laced and the ramblings of Brendan Suppression border on the banal. This is the point though right? Everyday boredom, dole lines, shit beer, conversing with people you'd rather not and plain disinterest in life. But the point could almost be the problem with Rush To Relax. As the title suggests it finds ECSR on their laurels, pulling back when they should be pressing forward. In the past they've worked the sloppy but precise angle perfectly. Seems to me ECSR's past winning equation is unbalanced on RTR.

Puerto Rico Flowers - 4

Change is an interesting thing, when I interviewed Sharkey (Clockcleaner fame) it seemed like he was over the whole Clockcleaner deal. Sick of playing for music fans (the worst kind of people) and the whole deal that comes with being in a touring band. Trading in the dirty floors, shit food, terrible support bands. As he put it he wanted to settle down and you know, fuck his wife. This meant moving to Australia. In between taking the wife to the movies and writing for VICE Magazine he found time to start a new band, Puerto Rico Flowers.

On 4, PRF aren’t making it hard for you. There are four tracks and also four basic elements. Drums, bass, synth and vocals this shit is raw. It sounds equal parts Flipper and Depeche mode. It creeps along at crawl Sharkey sounds as if he’s singing himself out of one hell of a hole.

Sharkey might of lost his snarl and there’s no needle sharp guitar but this is ballsier than Clockcleaner. PRF aren’t hiding from anything, if this was going to suck it wouldn’t just be bad, it’d be utter horseshit. So Clockcleaner fans, if you don’t like it, suck it up move on like Sharkey did. Change can be a good thing.

Chrome Dome Brisbane Tour

Melbourne's Chrome Dome will be coming to Brisbane to play a couple of shows bringing along Lakes and XTX. They play down-trodden synth punk with obvious and reverent nods to pioneers Suicide and Primitive Calculators. Chrome Dome are no rehash, inventive enough to mine their own territory occupying their own depths of despair and self-hatred. Contemporaries may include Sydney's Naked on the Vague, The Pink Noise, Silk Flowers and Factums. Definitely go to these shows the Negative Vibes CS is sold out and the 7" might be pretty hard to come across (help).

While you're at it buy their 'Loneliness is a Dirty Mattress' CD available at all the right record shops. This is a fine example of simple, downer, dirty pop music that hits all the right (or if you don' geddit, wrong) notes. See Pink Reason, Vaselines, The VU, Nirvana (probably way off). Members were/are in other bands that are/were also pretty alright (Look!Pond, On/Oxx, White Cop, Marl Carx, Per Purpose, Minxx).
